David E. Hoffman (1953-) was born in Palo Alto, California, and grew up in Delaware. In 1977 he moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the Capitol Hill News Service. As a member of the Washington bureau of the "San Jose Mercury News," he reported on Ronald Reagan's 1980 presidential campaign. In May 1982 he joined "The Washington Post" staff as a White House correspondent covering the Reagan presidency. From 1990 to 1992, he covered the presidency of George H. W. Bush.
